Moon+ Reader Not Opening EPUB? Fixes & Settings (Android)

EPUB files are ZIP archives with a specific structure. If a browser or messenger saved the file as .bin, .download, or without an extension, Android may not hand it to Moon+ Reader correctly.

• Rename carefully: The name should end in .epub (lowercase is fine on Android).
• File size sanity check: If the size is tiny (a few KB) or stuck at “0 B”, re-download—the transfer likely failed.
• Open from Files first: Long-press the file → Open with → Moon+ Reader Pro. If it still fails, the problem is usually the file or DRM, not the tap target in the library grid.

When Moon+ Reader won’t open EPUB from certain folders, the app may not have permission to read that path.

• Open Android Settings → Apps → Moon+ Reader Pro → Permissions and allow access to files/media as prompted.
• If books live under Download, Documents, or an SD card, grant the broad storage option your ROM shows (sometimes labeled All files access or Manage all files).
• After changing permissions, force-close Moon+ and open the EPUB again from the file manager.

Library auto-scan can miss deep paths. Use the in-app flow to import / open file (wording varies by version) and point directly at the .epub. That avoids “empty shelf” confusion when the file was never registered in Moon+’s catalog.

Moon+ Reader Pro is built for DRM-free EPUB and personal documents. Titles purchased from some ebook stores use Adobe, Kindle, or other DRM; those files often will not open in Moon+ until decrypted with the vendor’s own app—this is expected, not a bug.

If you need Amazon or locked-store books on Android, use that store’s reader for purchases and keep Moon+ for DRM-free EPUB, PDF, and comics. That split keeps EPUB not opening reports accurate: always match the tool to the license.

A damaged EPUB may import but fail at unpack time. Re-download from the original source, try another mirror, or transfer by USB instead of a chat app that recompresses files. If only one title fails while others open, suspect that specific file.

If the book opens but looks like mojibake, open the reader menu → look for encoding / character set options and try UTF-8 first, then the language of the edition. Pair that with a font that covers the script (Latin, CJK, etc.) in the visual settings panel.

If no EPUB opens while PDFs do, clear the app cache (Settings → Apps → Moon+ → Storage → Clear cache). Uninstall/reinstall only after backing up your library path notes, and grab the APK again from the same download block at the top of this page so you are not sideloading an unknown package.
